On Casey Anthony...

Or whatever her name is. Why is this news? Millions of children are murdered every year in the World. It's just called "Abortion" when they're still in the womb.

Exactly. What hypocrisy!

Well put. We are at war in at least five countries, our country is bankrupt, the nation is mired in an economic depression, and this crap is news? This is just further evidence of how far the news media and press have sunk. This is a tragic event. But it's local news. There is absolutely nothing in this that justifies any notice outside of whatever town it happened in.

This kind of 'news, John, is meant for distraction from the real issues, such as you have lsited.

You know, like bread and circuses.

Not only does such sensationalized news distract, but it "sells." Its all about ratings, and jerking emotions around seems to be good for ratings.

What else can we expect in a culture where now one can be a celebrity for just being a celebrity -- without any kind of artistic, political, or social achievements?

The problem isn't just the media, it is our society). I watched the comments from people "on the street" regarding the verdict and thought, "Who cares what you think? A jury decided and that is that. Let him/her who is without sin cast the first stone." News broadcasts often seem to be more about opinions or emotions than about events: chasing victims of crimes or disasters to ask how they "feel" about their tragedy; paying more attention to opinions regarding a legislative decision than to the actual debate or voting.

Perhaps if we all told the networks that we will quit watching if they don't start putting real "national" news on? News like the persecution of Christians in the Muslim world, or how nuns are burned alive to protest the citing of historical data by the Pope. Let the roving reporters ask some people in the street in Cairo or Tehran how they "feel" about that!

Oh dear, I think I have excited my passions... I better go back to my prayer rope.
